Quality of Life:
When I moved to Silicon Valley from the Los Angeles area as a single parent with two young sons, I was faced with the responsibility of providing a good home, good schools, and a safe environment for them, and a reasonable commute for myself that would allow me to be a good parent and a big part of their lives. Everyone who lives here struggles with the same challenges.
To sustain our economy and quality of life, we need places for people to live, work, play and enjoy. People come to California, as I did, because of the career and environmental opportunities. How many other places offer snowy mountains and ocean beaches a few hours drive from the technological center of the world?
We can either pave paradise and put up a parking lot, or we can continue to enjoy the best of both worlds.
We all want the same things, a rewarding career, an attractive place to live, and the opportunity for our children to achieve their fullest potential. We see the possibilities, and the barriers. Providing the former, and overcoming the latter, requires experience, vision, and courage.
I believe that my record shows that I have brought those things to my public service and my personal life.

Growth and Housing:
I believe Los Gatos needs to do more to meet the needs of the growing number of young families, while preserving the town's unique and attractive character.
To preserve the special character, spirit and appeal of Los Gatos in booming Silicon Valley, our town must initiate a dynamic program of services and activities for all its citizens.
In neighboring towns, I have seen many successful programs which would benefit our community, such as lighted fields for organized sports, public pools, skateparks and a full-service community center for dances, classes, meetings, clubs and other activities.
The "flatlands" of Los Gatos are nearly built out.
New construction in the mountain areas must conform to the General Plan and the Hillside Specific Plan, meet safety, visual and zoning requirements, and, most important, protect and preserve the environment.
Los Gatos must do more to provide its share of affordable housing in this region.
The town is an integral part of the region. I am a strong advocate of cooperative regional planning, and will do my part to support it. Our Redevelopment Agency is required to use 20% of the revenue it collects for affordable housing. That housing should be integrated into the community.
Smart growth implies a mix of jobs, homes, and open space.

Traffic and parking:
Parking, especially in the downtown business area, has improved, but continues to be a challenge.
The town continues to encourage downtown workers with all-day parking needs to use our convenient system of parking lots. All new building design must include planning for traffic flow. Although public transportation is a regional issue that will require regional solutions, every jurisdiction can participate in and support effective public transportation.
"Effective" means convenient, practical and attractive. I live in Los Gatos and have commuted to job sites for my software contract work all over the valley. Public transportation must get me, and the vast majority of people in similar situations, door-to-door, at widely varying work hours, in an effective manner. Local jurisdictions can cooperate by providing park-and-ride sites and shuttle services. Los Gatos must plan development to coordinate with new public transportation like the Vasona rail line.

Education:
We here in Silicon Valley are at the epicenter of the new technology that is changing the world.
We must have an educational system that will prepare our children for that world, and attract the best and brightest people from around the world.
The best people want the best schools for their children.
Our town and our schools must cooperate to achieve that goal.
That cooperation includes traffic and facility planning, pre-school and after-school activities.
Improving inter-generational respect and affection requires inter-generational interaction.
We should design our facilities to welcome whole families and people of all ages to work, play and learn together.
I have been actively involved in education all my life.
I served on the Los Gatos elementary school board for ten years before joining the Town Council, and as a volunteer teacher of a computer science course for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students every school day morning for the past thirteen years.
I have taught at the college and graduate level both here and in Europe. I received my elementary education in urban public schools in New York City, went on to earn a Ph.D. in physics, and served on the medical faculty of UCLA and UCSF.
As a single parent, I raised my two sons from grade school through college. One of my sons required special education.
I know how the system works, and how it can work better.
I know what our children need to prepare them for the new world.
I know from personal experience what children can accomplish.
We owe them the opportunity to do it.

Business:
With over twenty five years experience as an individual contributor, manager, and small business owner, I understand how the business world works.
